Ghost Ant

Identification

Ghost ants are easily identified by the translucent color on their legs and the back of their body, contrasted with a black head. Related to the odorous house ant, these ants emit a coconut-like odor when crushed. They are mostly found near moisture areas of the home.

Environment

Ghost ants have high moisture needs, which is why you’ll often find them around sinks, showers, tubs, in potted plants, behind baseboards, and in wall voids.

Threats

Ghost ants cannot sting but can bite. However, they are nonaggressive and will only bite if their nest is threatened. These bites are barely noticeable and do not pose any health threats to humans. The primary concern with ghost ants is their potential to contaminate food.

Treatment

  • Outdoor infestations: Spray any visible ant mounds with insecticides.
  • Indoor infestations: Avoid using sprays inside your home as they can split the colony and worsen the infestation. Protein baits are the most effective method for ghost ant removal.
