Merchant Grain Beetle

Overview of Merchant Grain Beetles

Merchant grain beetles are small, flat-bodied pests that can cause significant contamination in food storage areas. Despite their name, they prefer processed foods like cereals, cake mixes, and cookies over grains.

Identification

Merchant grain beetles can be identified by the following features:

  • Color: Dark brown
  • Size: About one-eighth of an inch long
  • Distinctive Feature: Six saw-like teeth on each side of their bodies
  • Body Shape: Extremely flat, allowing them to crawl into packaging

Environment

These pests are typically found in:

  • Pantries
  • Food processing areas
  • Warehouses

They thrive year-round in areas where food is accessible, often turning these spaces into breeding grounds. Preferred foods include:

  • Cereals
  • Cake mixes
  • Macaroni
  • Cookies
  • Chocolate

Threats

Merchant grain beetles pose several risks:

  • Food Contamination: They quickly infest food products, contaminating them.
  • Rapid Infestation Growth: Their flat bodies allow them to infiltrate packaging, where they eat, live, and reproduce.

Treatment

Effective treatment for merchant grain beetle infestations involves:

  1. Removing the Source: Locate and dispose of all infested food items.
  2. Cleaning and Vacuuming: Thoroughly clean inside cabinets, along wall edges, and on shelving to remove any remaining beetles or eggs.
  3. Preventative Measures: Store food in airtight containers to avoid future infestations.
